The Rookie Year, 2001-2002

In 2001, Mr. Thad Wilhelm, our team advisor, began teaching at Newport High School. After advising a FIRST Robotics team at his previous school, he decided to start one at Newport, too. Thus, the Newport Robotics Group was born.

In our first year, approximately twenty-five members joined the club to participate in public relations, animation, and building and designing the robot. We went to the first ever Pacific Northwest Regional comeptition at the University of Washington. FIRST's annual challenge was picking up balls and putting them in goals. These goals were supposed to be moved into certain scoring areas. Around 35 teams participated in the regional event and we received 5th place. We also made it to the quarter-finals and were presented with the Team Spirit Award.

Season Two, 2002-2003

The second year was even better than the first. The size of our club grew to around thirty people and we were able to build a much better robot. We entered a submission for the Chairman's Award and created an animation (unfortunately, it was disqualified on technicalities). We had a lot of fun at the competition. Although our robot was superior to last year's bot, we had a few unfortunate failures, like our robot being powered off by a falling box. Our team seeded 11th, but we received 6th place and reached the quarter-finals. Our Elimination rounds alliance included Team 360, The Revolution, which hails from nearby Tacoma, Washington.

Season Three, 2003-2004

Rolling Thunder picking up a Bonus Ball in 2004Our team had 33 members, with many veteran members participating in the club since the birth of our club two years ago. We'd definitely learned from our mistakes in previous years and reogranized the team into stricter groups and subgroups. A leadership council to made sure that everything was running smoothly and knew what they were supposed to be doing. In addition, we started designing and programming earlier.

Our robot, "Rolling Thunder" competed at the new location for the Pacific Northwest Regional, Portland, Orgeon.   We seeded 4th and reached the semifinals.

Season Four, 2004-2005

As Mr. Wilhelm left the school, our team brought a new advisor on board, Mr. Sherman Eddy.  The team once again grew in size to approximately 45 students.  Leadership roles became more formalized, and we attempted more in-depth training exercises.  Our robot performed once again well in the Pacific NW Regional, winning the Regional Finalist award.

Newport Robotics Group (NRG) has always been low on two things for FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC): money, and community outreach. Every year for the past 6 years, we have found ourselves underfunded at the end of the season with $200 left over at best, and $2000 under at worst. Sometimes this would affect our performance for the next year, but most of the time, our team was able to come together and raise enough funds to make it through the next year and we usually did quite well. This year though, we were more proactive. Before the season had even started, in fact, even before the summer had started, we had enough money to register for 2 FRC regionals, $10,000. This was amazing, our team had never had so much money, and especially not before school commenced. This incredible feat was accomplished with the donations of one very unique company, and an even more unique partnership. The relationship between NRG and Valve Software was a win-win situation for both of us.

The Newport Robotics Group (NRG) is a FRC (FIRST Robotics Competition) team based out of Newport High School in Bellevue Washington. As an FRC team, each year, NRG designs and builds a robot capable of competing in the FIRST Robotics Competition. This task is not easy. Besides the obvious engineering challenges involved in building a sophisticated robot in such a short time, the members of NRG also need to raise the funds to achieve their goals. All of these responsibilities and experience placed upon the members of NRG develop them into individuals passionate about technology and innovation and send them into the greater academic world ready to take the lead on the cutting edge of innovation of all kinds, be it technological, business or any other field they should chose to endeavor into.

FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), was founded in 1989 to inspire young people's interest and participation in science and technology.  Our mission is to inspire students to be science and technology leaders, by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership.

Each year Newport Robotics Group (NRG) has continued to flourish, thanks to community’s support. Through our involvement programs such as FIRST Lego League (a mentorship for middle school children) and FIRST Robotics Competition (a high school level of robotics competition) we open students’ eyes to the skills, opportunities, and genuine fun in science and math.

NRG continues working to further the education of students in real life. After completing the season, each and every student is able to proudly say that they have learned something, not only new, but that they can carry on with them for years to come, whether it be planning, organizing, designing, or building.

However, the team’s success depends largely upon our financial condition from year to year.  Since the basic costs of the competition can begin at a staggering $9,000.00, every bit of support is greatly valued.

With your contribution, our team can continue its legacy of premiere performance, and offer top-notch hands on experience to students with a true passion for science and mathematics.

Your valuable donation will surely support more students this season. We request you to send in your donation in the addressed, stamped envelope by February 1, 2009. If your employer has a matching gifts program please inform them of your donation.  Checks can be payable to Newport High School Robotics. Our tax id number is 91-6001637.

I hope we can count on you to help. Please send the most generous gift you can, as soon as possible.

Any donations are gratefully appreciated.
